According to Achim Steiner, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) climate change is a “threat multiplier”, meaning it has severe effects on weather, natural resources, settlements, infrastructure, food insecurity, livelihoods and development.
During the debate, some 65 delegates discussed different ways of approaching the issue. Several delegates disagreed with the Security Council addressing the topic of climate change, stating it is an encroachment on other UN mandates, such as the General Assembly, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Control (UNFCCC), and the Economic and Social Council. The President of Nauru commended the UN for its efforts to recognize women, peace and security (WPS) issues however, he believed that climate change would be the most pertinent issue facing the world in the near future and that is needs to be addressed immediately.
