The African Union / United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) was established in 2007 pursuant to Security Council Resolution 1769 (2007) as the follow-up to a pre-existing African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS). The mission is charged with protecting civilians, contributing to security for humanitarian assistance, monitoring and verifying implementation of peace agreements, contributing to the promotion of human rights and the rule of law, and monitoring and reporting on the situation along the borders with Chad and the Central African Republic.
