The United Nations Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG) was established pursuant to Security Council resolution 858 (1993) on 24 August 1993. The mandate of UNOMIG evolved over the next several years to eventually encompass activities that facilitated to the safe and orderly return of refugees and displaced persons, monitor and verify the implementation of ceasefires and agreements, and to monitor the withdrawal of troops from the area. UNOMIG came to an end in June 2009 due to a lack of action on the part of the Security Council in renewing the mandate. (UNOMIG)
