The United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) was established in 1964 in accordance with Security Council Resolution 186 (1964). The mandate of UNFICYP is to prevent a recurrence of fighting, and contribute to the maintenance and restoration of law and return to normal conditions. Additionally, the mission is charged with supervising the ceasefire between the Cyprus National Guard and the Turkish and Turkish Cypriot forces, as well as maintaining the buffer zone between each actor.
