The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was established pursuant to Security Council resolutions 425 (1978) and 426 (1978) in March 1978. The mission’s original mandate was to restore international peace and security by confirming Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon and assisting the Lebanese Government in restoring law and order. In 2006, UNIFIL’s mandate was expanded within Security Council resolution 1701 (2006) to monitor the cessation of hostilities, ensure humanitarian access to civilian populations the voluntary and safe return of displaced persons, and continue to assist the Lebanese government in securing its border and other entry points.
