The United Nations Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS) was established by the Secretary General on 15 April 1995. A mandate was later extended by Security Council Resolution 1863 (2009). United Nations efforts to achieve peace, reconciliation, and stability in Somalia after nearly two decades of lawlessness and conflict are led and coordinated by UNPOS, a field operation of the Department of Political Affairs (DPA) based in Nairobi, Kenya. UNPOS is currently striving to meet the immediate needs in the areas of stability and security, national reconciliation, government functionality, and humanitarian assistance. The Security Council has indicated its intention to establish a UN peacekeeping mission in Somalia, contingent upon political and security developments on the ground, including continued progress in the peace process and improvement of the security environment. In addition, the Security Council approved the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) by Security Council Resolution 1744 (2007) and has authorized renewals of AMISOM’s mandate through January 2013.
