The United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) was established pursuant to Security Council resolution 1590 (2005) on 24 March 2005. The mandate of UNMIS is to support the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, contribute towards international efforts to protect and promote human rights, with attention to protection of civilians. and to facilitate and coordinate the voluntary return of refugees and IDPs.
