The United Nations Integrated Mission in Timor-Leste (UNMIT) was established pursuant to Security Council resolution 1704 (2006) on 25 August 2006. UNMIT was the replacement for the United Nations Office in Timor-Leste (UNOTIL), which was the first political mission in the country following three peacekeeping missions: UN Mission in East Timor (UNAMET) from June – October 1999, UN Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) from October 1999 – May 2002, and UN Mission of Support in East Timor (UNMISET) from May 2002 – May 2005. The current mission’s mandate is to provide policy, political, technical and financial support to the government in the achievement of peace and democratic governance.
