The United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) was established pursuant to Security Council resolution 690 (1991) on 29 April 1991. The mandate of the mission is to monitor the ceasefire, verify the reduction of Moroccan troops, implement a repatriation program for refugees, identify and register qualified voters, and organize and ensure a free and fair referendum.
