General Women, Peace and Security
UN Implementation
United Nations (UN) Implementation is a sub-theme of the PeaceWomen Theme: General Women, Peace and Security, and part of PeaceWomen’s framework to organize women, peace and security resources for ease of reference and understanding. It is important to note that themes and sub-themes are interlinked and mutually reinforcing. UN Implementation is an over-arching category that is relevant all the other thematic areas. We recommend that users also browser other relevant thematic areas and see the section of the site PeaceWomen & the UN which monitors implementation within the UN system.
The various entities and bodies of the United Nations bear a large part of the responsibility for implementing the Security Council Resolutions 1325, 1820, 1888 and 1889. It is the work of these entities and bodies that helps make these policy commitments a reality at the country level where UN peace or development operations are in place. Read More>>

INTERNATIONAL: Resolving Conflict - Riots, Confrontation and UN Security Council Resolution 1325
The UN remains, as it has ever been, male-dominated. No woman has ever headed the UN. Despite the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), in all top level positions, women tend to be discounted as leaders, for women figure in far fewer numbers in any but lower level and support roles. As High Commissioner for Human Rights, Mary Robinson then Louise Arbor held the highest positions women had attained in the UN. Women have held the office of Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women since its inception in 2009. Meanwhile a woman heads the women's division – now titled UN Women. Despite these appointments, little has changed since 1973, when Shirley Hazzard wrote her searing critique of the UN, The Defeat of an Ideal, which she followed in 1990 with Countenance of Truth.

DRC: Protectors or Sexual Predators
"A dead rat is worth more than the body of a woman." Those were the words of one distraught young woman whom I met in Walikale in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) in 2010.
As the world was once again outraged at the reports of mass rapes in early June 2011 in the South Kivu, her words came back to me. Those attacks marked the fourth incident in a series of mass rapes which took place in the previous 18 months in the country. Hundreds of children, women and men have been left to recover with little or no assistance.

DRC: Commander in Militia Denies Role in Mass Rape
SADOKE KIKUNDA Mayele repeatedly cracks his knuckles as he sits restlessly in a small room up a dank stairway in Goma's central prison, the largest in eastern Congo. He cuts a distinctly underwhelming figure.
