The NGO Working Group on Women, Peace
and Security (NGOWG) was formed in May 2000 to successfully advocate
for a UN Security Council Resolution (SCR) on women, peace and
security. This was achieved collaboratively with the unanimous
adoption of SCR 1325 on 31 October 2000. Now, the NGOWG advocates
for and monitors the participation of women, prevention of conflict
and protection of all civilians, to ensure full and rapid implementation
of SCR 1325’s promises.

Office for the UN
November 2, 2005
The aim of the paper is to highlight women's critical role in peacebuilding,
as clearly recognized in SC resolution 1325, and ensure that women's
voices and experiences inform the development and functioning of
the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission (PBC).
NGO Working Group
on Women, Peace and Security Background Note on the Proposed UN
Peacebuilding Commission
By Vina Nadjibulla
The idea for the Peacebuilding Commission was first articulated
in the Report of the Secretary-General’s High-level Panel
on Threats, Challenges and Change. It was further modified by the
Secretary-General in his report In Larger Freedom: Towards Development,
Security and Human Rights for all. A proposal for the Peacebuilding
Commission has also been included in the draft outcome document
being prepared for consideration by world leaders in September.
