|SC Meetings and Actions | SC Resolutions | Reports from SC Missions|

Open sessions of the Security Council are often followed by a Presidential Statement or resolution. They offer the 15 Security Council members time to focus on substantive issues, rather than just reacting to situations in the many countries on the agenda, and also an opportunity to hear from other members of the United Nations.

Thematic Open Debate topics include:

• Women
• Prevention of Armed Conflict
• Children and Armed Conflict
• The Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflict
• Responsibility of the Security Council in the maintenance of international peace and security
• Role of United Nations Peacekeeping in Demobilization, Disarmament and Reintegration (DDR)
• Small Arms
• Security Council Summit, during the Millennium Summit, September 2000
• Protection for humanitarian assistance to refugees
• Debate on Humanitarian Issues before the Council
• Security Council Decision making and the closure or transition of United Nations peacekeeping operations
• The Brahimi Report and Peacekeeping
• Maintenance of peace and security and post-conflict peace-building
• HIV and international peacekeeping operations
