Commission on Sustainable Development

UN Entity Layer:
Functional Commissions

Established in 1992, the CSD monitors the implementation of UN Environment and Development initiatives and commitments, provides guidance at the local, national, regional, and international levels for the implementation of relevant policies. The Commission also provides financial, logistical, and technical support across these levels. While these means serve to build the capacities of communities and states, the CSD also engages in education and awareness raising around the social and economic dimensions for sustainable development and natural resources management. It serves as a high level forum, which meets annually to discuss specific thematic and cross-sector issues. [1]

Gender Equality

Gender and women, peace and security issues are not discussed by the CSD as independent agenda items. Addressing the disproportionate impact of poverty on women, however, represents a priority action under the issue of Poverty, which appears as an "overriding issue" on the agenda of the CSD each year. [2] Additionally, Gender Equality has appeared as a "cross-cutting" issue on the CSD's agenda for two consecutive cycles of deliberation. As such the CSD has developed a robust database of gender related case studies since 2008. [3]

Despite the CSD’s integration of gender issues, it is not clear whether the agency bases its gender architecture on Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR 1325) and its partner resolutions. Based on our research, there are no action plans/policy/work on implementation of UNSCR 1325 by the CSD.
