Statement of the Union of Comoros at the UNGA72

Disarmament: In the Near and the Middle East, the international community must mobilize to end the thousands of children crushed under bombs, hungry populations, the use of chemical weapons, the process of chaos and partition, in the countries at war. The international community must sanction the use of chemical weapons, enforce ceasefires, protect convoys of humanitarian aid and create conditions for the resumption of political negotiations.

Nuclear weapons: The Union of the Comoros took part yesterday, at the United Nations, in the ceremony of signatures for the new Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. I myself signed this document, thus joining the international community to demand to all the countries concerned to conform to these resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, and to abandon their nuclear arms programs.

Human rights: To speak of human beings is to invoke human rights, and the human dignity that is an objective of the United Nations.

Bosnia: We condemn without reserve the atrocities suffered by minorities, yesterday in Bosnia-Herzegovina and today in Burma against the Rohyngas, as well as all other minorities everywhere else… I hope our organisation will defend the most basic rights of the oppressed, independent of considerations of origins, race, sex and faith.

SDGs: What priorities do we give to human beings, in the face as such macabre scenes and human rights violations in everyday life! The international community must act to put an end to these acts and to sanction actors, at the risk of losing its credibility in the eyes of the people who believe in this institution, in the law, in our duty and capacity to assure them protection, dignity, and well-being. By guaranteeing peace, security and human rights, we will be able to collectively promote the SDGs, in particular for a decent daily life, health for all, education for new generations whose technological possibilities present infinite possibilities.

SDGs: To succeed and achieve the 17 objectives of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, we need to count firsts on ourselves and our resources. However, we need international solidarity, including industrialists, bankers and international investors.

Palestine: The lack of a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the status quo favors the insecurity and destabilisation of the Middle East. A solution to this conflict would be the end of the unbearable colonisation of the Palestinian territories, the end of injustice and violence against the Palestinian territories and the global resolution of this conflict that has lasted more than a half-century. At its base, the two state solution would confer on the Palestinian people its right to full sovereignty with East Jerusalem as its capital.
