This project builds on UNIDIR's research to consolidate the United Nations' knowledge of Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration programmes (DDR), while extending and furthering training in support of DDR. In particular, through a focus on furthering the aims of Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) which calls for the inclusion of women in all aspects of DDR programmes.
Fifteen UN agencies produced in 2004-2006 the United Nations Integrated Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration Standards (IDDRS). The project thus supports the development of IDDRS-compatible DDR training, including monitoring and evaluation to assess the impacts of such training.
Finally, research and awareness-raising is needed to further the goals of Security Council Resolution 1325 by re-designing several aspects of DDR processes, monitoring the impacts of DDR implementation, especially on women's security, training more women DDR experts and training men in gender competency. The project will conduct field research, including in Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, on women's security and Security Council Resolution 1325 and coordination with various UN agencies, donors and regional organizations.
