United Nations, Oct 28 (Prensa Latina) UN Security Council on Friday called to combat negative social attitudes regarding women's full participation in conflict resolution and mediation.

The Security Council also urged to create favorable conditions to boost the performance of females in all stages of peace processes.

Nagaland State Women Commission Chairperson Sano Vamuzo has said that the impact of conflict on women has become a huge topic particularly in the conflict-ridden regions of the world, and the northeast has in recent years become a focal point for research and study from various angles.

Following are UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's remarks at the Security Council open debate on woman and peace and security, in New York, 28 October:

I commend Nigeria's choice of theme for today's debate, and I thank Madam President and Council members for understanding and agreeing to start earlier than usual to allow me to participate in this important meeting.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon on Friday called for a greater role of women in conflict prevention and mediation, which he said "is essential for building peace and reinforcing the foundations of democracy."

The statement came as the secretary-general was addressing an open debate at the UN Security Council on the role of women in achieving peace and security.

Nadifa, a widowed mother of four, left her hut near Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, to search for food. When she returned home hours later, she found a man raping her 11-year-old daughter. Nadifa tried to defend her daughter but was torn away by armed men as she screamed. The neighborhood watched helplessly as the men abducted Nadifa. She was pistol-whipped, kicked, punched, and scorched with burning plastic.
