LEBANON: Women's Groups Caution MPs on Violence Law

Campaigners for a draft law to outlaw domestic violence urged MPs Friday to refrain from passing a “hollowed-out” version of the legislation.

A national campaign in support of criminalizing domestic violence, representing more than 150 nongovernmental organizations, distributed a 64-page report on domestic violence that analyzes the process of submitting complaints on domestic violence under the current penal code.

DRC: U.N. Cites Congo Officers in Rape Inquiry

The United Nations on Friday named two Congolese Army colonels who appear to be blocking an investigation of soldiers accused of raping at least 47 women in eastern Congo, and said that if the attackers were not identified, the officers themselves should stand trial for the crimes committed by the troopers under their command.

Police in Jammu and Kashmir have registered a complaint of abduction and rape based on allegations by a woman against two Army personnel.

Rukaya Bano, a woman in south Kashmir's Kulgam district, has alleged that two Army men raped her after abducting her when she came out of her home on Tuesday.

On her recent trip to Lithuania, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton noted that many women have achieved success in Central and Eastern European countries. Lithuania, for example, has a woman president, a woman speaker of parliament, a woman finance minister and a woman defense minister. But unfortunately, there are too many countries where women still struggle to attain full political, economic, and social rights.

SOMALIA: New Somali Minister for Women Kidnapped

Somalia's new minister for women has been kidnapped by the militant group al-Shabab, less than a day after her appointment.

Reports citing a relative and various Somali officials say Asha Osman Aqil was seized by al-Shabab fighters in Somalia's Middle Shabelle region.

Somali Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali had named her to his cabinet on Wednesday.
