INTERNATIONAL: Ten Years on from Resolution 1325

At an event marking the 10th anniversary of the landmark Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, the man credited with pushing through the resolution was not in a celebratory mood. Ambassador Anwarul Chowdhury, dubbed “the father of Resolution 1325,” expressed disappointment at the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) event about slow progress in achieving women's participation and protection.

Switzerland is taking further steps to implement an international resolution that aims to increase the participation of women in the peace process.

AFRICA: Women Human Rights Defenders Adopt Banjul Declaration

Women human rights defenders meeting in Banjul as a prelude to the 48th Ordinary session of the African Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies (ACDHRS) have adopted a declaration which would further their work and press for their protection.

The meeting, which attracted participants across Africa, Asia and Latin America, was held between the 4th and 6th November 2010 at the Kairaba Beach Hotel.

UGANDA: Gender Imbalance Cited in Slow Northern Recovery Programme

WOMEN's organisations working for peace in the Greater North are concerned that the Peace, Recovery and Development Plan (PRDP) lacks gender sensitivity.

The PRDP is a Government plan dealing with the reconstruction of the region.

The women say they were not involved in the definition of PRDP, and that the framework does not recognise their leadership role and falls short of addressing their needs and rights.
