The costs of our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are staggering, especially as they relate to social needs in the U.S. that are neglected because of military spending.
For a chilling look at the cost of war on the local level, go to http://www.costofwar.com. For Barnstable County, the cost of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq is more than $1 billion! One billion dollars could purchase a lot of schools, roads, libraries, health care, arts programs, community centers, senior services, housing, parks, playgrounds, social service needs and environmental improvements.
The more chilling costs are the human lives lost and damaged in these wars. American casualties are as follows:
U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan: 5,748;

Members of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) are demanding a Congressional vote to end the wars and occupations in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan. We also demand no bombing or invasion of Iran. The Cape Cod Branch of WILPF supports these demands, and we urge all our Congressional representatives to take whatever measures are required to end these wars.
