Raped and deported from Angola along with thousands of many others, a group of 339 Congolese women remain without assistance in their own country, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the communication officer of Caritas/Development, Jean-Pierre Kamuonii, told the press here Tuesday.

According to Kamuonii, these women are currently in the Western Province of the Kaisal, in central DRC, needing psychological, physical, and financial assistance to get them settled and avoid an outbreak of some humanitarian problems, including diseases.

He said the deportees, numbering 4,885 people, also included 322 abandoned children and appealed to the Congolese government to assist the returnees.

In November, the international non-governmental organization, Comitato Internazionale per lo Sviluppo dei populi, had condemned the resumption of deportation of Congolese people from Angola.

However, Angolan authorities insist that the Congolese deportees are illegal immigrants who occupy Angolan mining fields.
