South African musician Yvonne Chaka Chaka has launched a documentary on the struggles of African women and girls.
The film, The Motherland Tour: The journey of African Women, was launched in Nairobi and has premiered in 12 countries all over the world.
Speaking at a press conference, Humanitarian Advisor of the Princess of Africa Foundation Louis Dagama said the film focused on women and their most pressing issues including malaria, maternal and child health, Aids, empowerment, education and poverty.
“This film is for women and the issues affecting them. We are asking both world leaders and African leaders to keep their promise and provide funds for overcoming these challenges.”
Chaka Chaka challenged governments to account for funds from donors since most Africans did not have access to basic health services.
2015 is around the corner, how far are we from our development goals?
“Leaders should take responsibility and use funds for the benefit of the public,” she said. The film targets politicians, heads of state and other individuals in positions of power. It also aims to raise funds for the fight against malaria.
“We need to promote community health. This will be through trying to ensure that people access medical facilities as the long distances they have to travel to get treatment is the major obstacle.”
The renowned musician hopes that the documentary will inspire people to support the empowerment of women and girls and the global fight against poverty and preventable diseases like malaria.
