Fostering Young Women's Leadership: Strategies for accelerating Women's Empowerment and Gender Equality in Africa

UN Women-Africa, under the auspices of the Imbutu Foundation and in partnership with Moremi Initiative for Women's Leadership in Africa is convening a three-day consultative conference with key stakeholders on youth development and empowerment in Africa. The consultation under the theme “Fostering Young Women's Empowerment: Strategies for accelerating Women's Leadership and Gender Equality in Africa” is being organized as part of ongoing consultations towards the development of the UN Women's first Strategic Plan.

Scheduled for May 29-31, 2011 in Kigali, Rwanda, the conference, seeks to solicit input from key stakeholders in devising sustainable strategies for engaging emerging African women leaders in the advancement of gender equality and the realization of key issues of concern to women on the continent.


UN Women Africa, as part of the ongoing historic institutional transformation for women at the UN level, renews its commitment to ensure greater engagement of African youths in addressing critical issues of importance to women and girls on the continent. The renewed efforts of UN Women Africa follows the the launch of the Decade for Africa Women by the AU in Nairobi in October 2010,which seeks to to consider the realities of Africa girls and young women between 2010 and 2020 and guarantees that their needs and interest will be properly considered and addressed. It is an opportune moment to work with governments, civil society and communities across the continent to harness the potential of African youths to create change for women and girls in Africa.

PURPOSE OF THE AFRICA CONSULTATIVE CONFERENCE

§ Engage and solicit inputs from key stakeholders on youth and young women in particular

§ Devise concrete strategies for engaging young African women in advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women on the continent.

§ Articulate and validate key regional gender equality priorities and opportunities for young African women;

§ Propose fresh ideas, new entry points and strategic actions for UN WOMEN in Africa and explore concrete partnership opportunities and strategies.
