KYRGYZSTAN: UNDP Supported a Seminaron Strengthening the Role of Women in Consolidation of Interethnic Relations

On October 27, 2010 Osh Province State Administration hosted a province level seminar on “Strengthening the role of women in consolidation of interethnic relations”. The seminar was organized by Family and Women Affairs Commission under the Osh Province State Administration upon the initiative of Osh Province Advisory Committee with the support of UNDP Peace and Development Program, Kyrgyzstan.

The goal of the seminar – increasing potential of women and women councils in conflict prevention and developing recommendations on strengthening interethnic relations in Osh oblast. Representatives of Osh Province Administration, UNPD Peace and Development Program, Kyrgyzstan, NGOs, women councils, crisis centers and women leaders participated in the seminar.

During the seminar the participants noted an important role in increasing effectiveness of women councils' activity in strengthening mutual understanding, friendship and keeping interethnic consent. Joint work of women organizations and local oblast self-government authorities will be targeted at consolidation of relations, mutual trust and understanding among the people. Seminar became an arena for work experience exchange, working out measurements on strengthening good neighborly relations between various nationalities, reaching consent and peace.

As per the results of the seminar the participants developed recommendations for the oblast women council for November-December, 2010-2011. The recommendations included conduction of explanatory works among the population, friendship festivals, organization of meetings for the representatives of various nations, publishing articles and release of video PSAs about nations' friendship, and also conducting drawing, essays writing contests for the students of secondary schools.
