African women under the aegis of Women Advancement for Economic and Leadership Empowerment (WAELE), has condemned the recent military coup in Niger Republic which ousted President Mamadou Tandja from office.
WAELE at the end of its 3-day continental executive meeting held in Abuja weekend described the coup d'état as most barbaric and out of tune with the present world order, adding that the military junta, Major Adamu Haruna should respect the constitution of Niger and give democracy a right of way in the uranium-rich African nation.
WAELE President, Dr. Basirat Nahibi said, "WAELE is deeply concerned with the situation in Niger Republic which has ended in a coup d'état. It is a most savage thing to do in the present world order where every nation on earth is working towards entrenching representative governance. We, therefore, condemned totally Major Adamu Haruna-led military coup in Niger Republic."
She appealed to all African leaders to respect their countries' constitutions to strengthen democracy, adding that her organization would, through negotiation and conflict mediation always work to promote peace and democratic processes on the Continent.
