The President, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, today, Tuesday, March 29, 2011 made two fundamental policy statements that will dramatically change the lives of women and the girl-child in Sierra Leone .
Government, according to His Excellency the President is working in concert with the Female Parliamentary Caucus to immediately put in place the necessary structures for a legislation that will allow all women in Sierra Leone to attain the 30 percent quota in Parliamentary representation, Cabinet representation and all other levels in governance, as a way of empowering the women folk in Sierra Leone.
The President assured the women in Sierra Leone at the International Women's day celebration in Magburaka, that as from next year, Women's Day will be recognized as a public holiday throughout Sierra Leone.
He further stated that as from now on his Government will take firm decisions in handling matters relating to rape, and pleaded with the Judiciary to fast track cases of rape, not withstanding the mental status of the perpetrator who he said, must be sent to jail for their anti-social activity.
The President also announced at the Magburaka ceremony for women that special opportunities will be given to the girl -child to enhance the status of women in Sierra Leone, and that all girls who pass their West Africa Secondary School Examination in the Sciences will automatically qualify for a Government sponsored scholarship.
President Koroma committed his Government to the welfare of womanhood as he insisted that no country can progress without the participation of women, hence his decision to allow the 30 percent women participation in all spheres of Governance.
