This August SCHAP teammates Jessica Davies and Nelson Powers went to Uganda on August 8, and then back again August 24th and 25th to visit and document the women there.
For over two years, SCHAP has sold the jewelry made by a group of Acholi women in Uganda living in a refugee camp there. These women were forced to leave their homes due to the war raging in Uganda since 1986, where thousands have been murdered, tortured and mutilated and children kidnapped and forced to become child soldiers. In the camp these women take recycled paper and turn them into beautiful necklaces and bracelets that SCHAP has been selling here in the states. Making these goods provides a livelihood for these women so they are not forced to make money working in a canyon, converting larger rocks into gravel ("hard core"), using only a small hammer with ZERO eye or body protection.
