UNITED NATIONS SYSTEM IN GUATEMALA CONDEMNS THREATS AGAINST NORMA CRUZ, DIRECTOR OF ‘SURVIVORS FOUNDATION'

The United Nations System in Guatemala condemns the recent threats against Mrs. Norma Cruz, Director of the Survivor Foundation, who reported having received intimidating phone calls related to her work at the organization. Fundacion Sobrevivientes (Survivors Foundation) is formed by survivors of violence that work as Human Rights Defenders for women's rights in cases related to domestic violence, sexual violence, human trafficking and murder of women.

The United Nations System in Guatemala expresses its concern regarding these events, which add to the growing number of threats registered against the defenders of human rights in the country.

The UN System calls upon the responsible authorities the to act through a prompt, exhaustive and efficient investigations to identify, process, judge and sanction the people who are responsible for the threats against Mrs. Cruz.
Additionally, it exhorts the institutions of the State to take the necessary measures to guarantee Mrs. Cruz and the personnel of Survivors Foundation their safety. Moreover, the State should implement with urgency measures to protect the work of the defenders of human rights in Guatemala.

The United Nations System expresses its solidarity with Mrs. Norma Cruz and the personnel of Survivors Foundation and encourages them to continue with their work in the defense of women's human rights.
