Speaking Truth to Power: Women Peacebuilders Tell of Struggle and Triumph on 10th Anniversary of Groundbreaking Resolution 1325

NEW YORK – The Global Network of Women Peacebuilders (GNWP) in partnership with a number of other international organizations* today announced a virtual peace conference connecting women from conflict zones around the world and examining progress made since the United Nations Security Council adopted the groundbreaking Resolution 1325 in 2000. The Resolution recognized that while women suffer disproportionately during armed conflict and are often excluded from the negotiating table, they are a force for peace and have a right to equal participation when accords are made.

“1325 is a powerful tool for asserting women's rights and access to power,” says Mavic Cabrera-Balleza International Coordinator for The Global Network for Women Peacebuilders (GNWP). “But we need to hear from the women on the ground, who are trying to live what that document has promised. In our peace web conferences, women from Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo and other conflict zones will join us to tell their stories and really put a face on what Resolution 1325 has accomplished and what they still need from governments and the UN.”

The first cyberdialogue discussing UNSCR 1325, will take place on Monday, October 25th from 1:00 to 3:00 pm EST. This event will bring together global policy makers such as Helen Clark, former Prime Minister of New Zealand and currently UNDP Administrator and women from all over the world for a web-enabled, real-time conversation. The agenda for this Cyber Dialogue will include a detailed account of what has transpired on a global scale since the inception of UNSCR 1325 in 2000. The second cyberdialogue is scheduled on October 29th from 1:00 to 3:00 pm EST.

The cyberdialogue is one of the many events taking place as part of the Peace Fair at the UN Church Center from October 25-29, 2010. It has been made possible by the Open Society Institute and facilitated by local offices of UNDP.
