General Women, Peace and Security

The Permanent Mission of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations, UN Women, and the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security would like to invite you to participate in a panel discussion on women, peace and security in the context of climate change. This is the third panel discussion in a Panel Series on Women, Peace and Security, hosted by the UAE and its partners, in support of the Global Study on the Implementation of Security Council resolution 1325 (2000).

Climate change has led to an increase in the frequency and intensity of natural disasters, natural resource scarcity, and environmental degradation, which in many contexts has contributed to the exacerbation of conflict, particularly in areas with weak institutions, political instability, and high rates of poverty. These factors can undermine conflict prevention and peacebuilding initiatives and challenge existing adaptation and mitigation strategies. The women, peace and security agenda provides a useful framework to further explore the linkages between climate change and conflict and the differential impact on women and children. As climate change and its potential security implications make it more difficult to sustain livelihoods, the need to include women in adaptation and mitigation strategies becomes increasingly important.

We hope to engage a broad range of experts, Member States, and civil society in a discussion on how to best mainstream gender across climate change mitigation and management efforts, including by promoting and prioritizing women's agency, leadership, and participation across all decision-making, planning, and implementation levels.

A concept note is attached to this invitation providing more details on the conversation.

Kindly RSVP by 13 January by EMAIL to rsvp@uaemission.org. Should you require a UN pass, please EMAIL rsvp@uaemission.org no later than 12 January.

About the Series

The UAE Panel Series on Women, Peace and Security will address the gaps and challenges in the implementation of 1325, as well as identify emerging issues and look for opportunities to further the goals of the WPS agenda. Each panel will result in a summary, written in partnership with the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security, reflecting the discussions. These summaries will inform the Global Study, and will be available on UN Women's web portal.
