A training workshop on women's effectual political participation organized by Yemeni Women's Union (YWU) and Club of Madrid for Promoting Democracy in the World started here on Sunday.

The two-day workshop, which comes as an extension for the last meeting held in February 2009, aims to increase the political participation of Yemeni women, Fathiah Mohammed, Deputy Chairwoman of YWU said in her speech.

She noted the role of civil society organizations, which work in women field, in the political literacy of women and empowering women economically to reach leadership positions.

On the other hand, the YWU's official pointed to the role of media in raising awareness of women status and their rights mentioned in Islam's teachings and Arab and international charters signed by Yemen as well as eliminating all forms of discrimination against women.

For her part, former Prime Minister of New Zealand Jennifer Shipley affirmed that the Yemeni women's experience will succeed only if it was planned by Yemeni people themselves.

Shipley pointed to the role of Club of Madrid that helps forming thoughts of Yemeni women and transferring them to strategies for enhancing their roles and better participations in future.

The club hopes improving women's condition to enjoy their complete rights and political participation, Shipley said.

She indicated the necessity of availing from the club's experiences which includes former leaders from different countries to improve the performance and political participation in Yemen.
