This paper explores efforts undertaken by the United Nations to recognize and tackle the gendered nature of conflict and women's roles in peace and security. Specifically, it examines UN Security Council resolution 1325 (hereafter SCR 1325), which is the cornerstone of the international community's commitment to women, peace and security. It argues that although SCR 1325 is a watershed decision that takes into account women's undervalued contributions to building peace and sustainable security, it has yet to reach its full potential, as implementation remains problematic.
