UN Action UN Action Against Sexual Violence in Conflict

UN Action is an internal body within the UN system that unites the work of 13 UN entities with the goal of ending sexual violence in conflict. UN Action is a part of the UN's implementation on several resolutions that followed SCR 1325(2000), mainly 1820(2008) and 1880(2009) who are linking conflict-related sexual violence with the maintenance of international peace and security.

UN Action was created as a response to requests from women’s rights organizations, NGOs and rape survivors for the UN to do much more to provide a holistic response. While recognizing that the problem is a security as well as a humanitarian and developmental issue, UN Action strengthens efforts by UN entities to better coordinate and rationalize their activities at country and global levels.

The main goals of UN Action are: amplify and better coordinate the work of the UN system in addressing sexual violence in conflict; to deepen partnerships with NGOs and civil society organizations; to strengthen both the UN’s response to survivors and efforts to prevent sexual violence during and after conflict; and to supports women’s engagement in conflict prevention and enhances their influence over peace negotiations and post-conflict recovery processes. 

The work of UN Action is organized in three main pillars. The first one, Country Level Action, works to provide strategic support to UN action at country level. The second one, Advocating for Action, strives to raise public awareness and generate political will to address sexual violence as part of a broader campaign to Stop Rape Now. The last one, Learning by Doing, is creating a knowledge hub on the scale of sexual violence in conflict, and effective responses by the UN and partners.
