Women's organizations, feminists and peace activists face multiple dilemmas in trying to make themselves heard and have an impact on the political process.

Sometimes a murder manages to shine a light on a particular problem. The Sandy Hook School massacre ignited a national conversation, albeit a still unsatisfactory one, on gun violence. And the shooting of Reeva Steenkamp by South Africa's star runner Oscar Pistorius may open a window on some of the darker facts of life for so many South Africans, women in particular.

The UN Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, adopted by the Security Council in 2000, is considered by many a historic milestone. In it the Council dealt for the first time specifically with women's experiences in conflict situations, recognising their contribution to conflict resolution, prevention and management.

This is my first visit to the Philippines. I usually campaign for peace in Congo, Somalia and other conflict-affected countries in Africa.

Women think about the gun-control issue differently than men. To many women, say analysts and pollsters, the gun debate is less about preserving gun rights and more about preserving safety in their neighborhoods.

El Salvador holds regional consultation on the status of violence against women

Hundreds of women in the City of Joy in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo dance to raise awareness of violence against women as part of the One Billion Rising campaign. The global event was prompted by the statistic that one in three women will suffer violence at some time in their lives.
