As the Israeli-Palestinian talks stall, the United States should consider this opportunity to reassess the negotiation process more broadly. Previous talks have suffered from lack of both transparency and inclusiveness: for most of the past 20 years, an extremely small group of high-level political leaders has met behind closed doors, rarely sharing information with or seeking input from their stakeholders.

In 2009, FAWE (The Forum for African Women Educationalists) submitted a project on Girls' empowerment in post-conflict countries through vocational training to the Danish International Development Agency (Danida). The idea was to implement a project that would empower out-of-school girls in three conflict-affected fragile states (CAFS) in Africa: Burundi, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

It is well known that history is often a case of "his"-tory - that the stories of women are omitted and forgotten, even powerful women who have broken down gender barriers and made a difference in their societies. Furthermore, the peaceful side of history is often neglected, as history textbooks tend to be a litany of battles, conquerors, and consequences.

October 2010 marks ten years since the passage of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (PDF) on women, peace and security. This landmark resolution calls on institutions working on peace and security at both global and national levels to address the different impacts of conflict on women and men, and to engage women fully in conflict prevention, resolution, peacekeeping, peace-building and throughout the security sector.

I was blown away to be asked to join a delegation to Israel and Palestine led by Nobel Peace Laureates Jody Williams and Mairead Maguire, and organized by the Nobel Women's Initiative. When NWI first got in touch, I thought it must have been some kind of misunderstanding. I'm a media activist, a writer, and an educator about sexuality and ending sexual violence. I don't get invited on peace delegations led by Nobel laureates every day.

Women's Voices Now is a new and unique non-profit organization based in New York City that seeks to empower women by giving them a platform to voice out their lack of and struggles to obtain civic, economic, and political rights.
