Want a breakthrough in Mideast peace negotiations? Open the talks to women -- that's the nontraditional approach that two women from the Institute for Inclusive Security advise in a recent opinion piece.

Today, I am delighted to announce the appointment of Ms. Michelle Bachelet, former President of Chile, as the head of UN Women, the newly created UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, established on 2 July by the General Assembly Resolution.

Among our activities as an organization is to distribute humanitarian aid to women detained at the Directorate of Transfers in Kirkuk. Female detainees suffer from infirmity and lack of decent accommodations. The Ministry of the Interior does not ensure that it provides anything for them save basic meals of food and water, which would put them in a poor psychological state if it weren't for what civil society organizations gave them.

Every day, an alarming number of communities are losing mothers, wives, daughters, sisters and friends. Most of these deaths are preventable, all that's needed is access to family planning and high quality healthcare.

After a decade-long conflict, Sierra Leone has many challenges ahead including improving child and maternal health. in 2009, one in eight women died during pregnancy. Fatimata Konte, an expecting mother, fears giving birth after already losing five of her children. She hopes the new policy to bring free health care to all pregnant women will save her next child and make giving birth safe for all women. Senior Producer: Ami Vitale.

Women under 30 looks at young African women who mentor and inspire their community by challenging the existing discourse / notion that Women are mentally and physically incompetent to perform certain responsibilities. The team is therefore in search for Young women under 30 who are doing everything possible within their reach to represent the womans' competence in all works / fields of life.

I want to tell you about a woman I know, who shall be called Alma (not her real name). She is a lawyer from the Philippines with large dreams and a large heart. She came to Canada very young and already a lawyer. She saw how she could never be a lawyer here unless she went to law school in Canada; she did that, and passed the bar.
