LIBERIA: Women Reinforce Advocacy for Equality

A three-day symposium on gender issues that impact the 1986 constitutional reviewing process got underway in Monrovia yesterday with women groups calling for the preservation of certain basic rights in the Constitution seeking equal participation in political governance.

The women's zealous advocacy began despite a legislative action squashing a bill seeking 30% representation of women at all levels of governance.

EU: Violence Against Women Still "Significant Challenge" in EU

Irish minister of state for equality Kathleen Lynch has announced that she will be pushing for "tight, firm conclusions" on violence against women during Ireland's EU council presidency.

Speaking at a meeting of parliament's women's rights and gender equality committee, Lynch said, "We all agree that there is no country in Europe where violence against women is not a problem."

A new report published by the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) in collaboration with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that in 12 Latin American and Caribbean countries studied, between 17% and 53% of women interviewed reported having suffered physical or sexual violence by an intimate partner. In seven of the countries, more than one in four women reported such violence.

The national security committee of the Iranian parliament is considering a new passport bill, that would severely limit women's right to travel.

It's already very restricted.

Right now, all Iranians under the age of 18 - both male and female - must get permission from their father before they can leave the country.

A civil society activist on Tuesday filed a petition in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking direct elections of women on reserved seats in the parliament.

The petitioner, Gul Zari Khan, also requested the court to order the political parties to hold intra-party elections.
