100th International Women's Day - March 8th 2011

The year, 2011, marks the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day. The day was first commemorated on 19 March 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland, following its establishment during the Socialist International meeting the prior year. More than one million women and men attended rallies on that first commemoration.

On 21 January 2011, the Security Council held an Open Debate on Post-Conflict Peacebuilding: Institution Building. The debate featured 45 statements including from the Secretary-General, the permanent and nonpermanent members of the Council, the Chair of the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC), and twenty-eight other delegations (including the European Union, African Union and G7+ coalition of fragile states).
