Participation

The Participation theme focuses on women’s representation and participation in peace processes, electoral process – as both the candidate and voter – UN decision-making positions, and in the broader social-political sphere.

The Security Council acknowledges the need for strategies to increase women’s participation in all UN missions and appointments to high-level positions in SCR 1325(OP3) and 1889(OP4) and further emphasises the need for women’s participation in peacebuilding processes (1889). 

Specifically, it calls for the mobilisation of resources for advancing gender equality and empowering women (OP14), reporting on the progress of women’s participation in UN missions (OP18), equal access to education for women and girls in post-conflict societies (OP11), and the increase of women’s participation in political and economic decision-making (OP15). Until this language translates into action, the potential for women’s full and equal contribution to international peace and security will remain unrealized.

CAMEROON: Women in Politics

On a sunny day in early May, in Ndu, northwest Cameroon, a group of women, many of whom have taken the day off from work on their farms, are evaluating the performance of an aspiring politician. One suggests smiling more, another that the candidate project her voice more and not look at her feet while talking. The women are here in the Bishop Shanahan Centre to improve their public-speaking skills and learn more about electoral procedures.

ISRAEL: Women Playing Key Roles in Israeli Politics

USA: Women Break Male Perspective in Political Office

During the 2012 race for the Iowa United States House of Representatives, there were 12 candidates running, one woman and 11 men.

Christie Vilsack was the only woman to run but was defeated by incumbent Steve King.

Vilsack is not the first woman to run and be defeated. A woman has never served as an Iowa representative in Congress or as Iowa's governor, which brings to question the struggles women in politics face today.

YEMEN: Group Urges Yemen to Protect Women's Rights in New Constitution

An international human rights group is urging Yemen to ensure that its new constitution has adequate protections for women.

Human Rights Watch addressed Yemen's National Dialogue in its Tuesday statement. The conference brings together political and religious leaders and other representatives to decide on the country's political system before writing a constitution.
