Between the very intricate social structure of the Gaza Strip and the constant political disorder, Palestinian women experience huge challenges on a daily basis. Thanks to a high density, motley population from many different backgrounds, there are many social codes governing what women can and cannot do, in marriage customs, education and employment. And they vary significantly from one district to another.

Opposition head Tzipi Livni and Defense Minister Ehud Barak found some common ground on Monday, as both argued in a Knesset hearing that Israel still needs to advance the role of women in peace negotiations.

The costs of our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are staggering, especially as they relate to social needs in the U.S. that are neglected because of military spending.
