Implementation

The Implementation theme focuses on the way UN system, Member States and other parties at all levels work to uphold their commitments to implementing the Women, Peace and Security Agenda.

Within the UN, there are a variety of implementation mechanisms. For one, the Security Council has requested that the Secretary-General release an annual report on Women, Peace and Security and the achievements, gaps, and challenges of the implementation process. The establishment of the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, also known as UN Women, now also provides an integrated institutional framework to assist Member States with implementing equality standards and the UN will be held accountable for its own commitments on gender equality.

Among Member States, National Action Plans (NAPs) are a key mechanism through which governments identify their inclusion and equality priorities and commit to action. Local and Regional Action Plans provide additional and complementary implementation mechanisms.

It is critical for the engagement of women and gender equality to be integrated into all aspects of development, diplomacy, peacekeeping and protection throughout local, national, and international systems.

At the national level, many countries have taken the issue on by adopting action plans that seek to give effect to the relevant resolutions of the Security Council. For its part, Gabon has taken concrete measures that make it possible today for many women to assume important responsibilities, including at the highest levels in all branches of the army and the police force.
