The South African 50/50 by 2005 Campaign

The South African 50/50 by 2005 campaign was launched by GAP to achieve an equal representation of women in government, legislatures and political parties by the year 2005. The timing of the campaign could not be more favourable, as South Africa is heading for its third democratic general election in 2004 and local government elections in 2005.

Namibian Women and Democracy: The 50/50 Campaign

The Women's Environmental and Development Organisation is spearheading a local grassroots campaign to strengthen the role of Namibian women in government and society.

The Gender and Governance Program seeks women's full and equal access to all areas and all levels of public life, working toward gender balance in terms of participation and representation, especially in governmental decision-making positions.

Recommendations from Sudanese Women's Civil Society Organizations to the Security Council Delegation, 5-9 June 2006

Letter prepared for the recent Security Council visit to Sudan, and signed by hundreds of women's organizations and networks including those in Darfur, Nuba Mountains, Eastern Sudan and South Sudan.

The letter was prepared with support from UNFPA and the UNMIS Gender Advisor's office, with input by other UN agencies.

FAS Executive Director Visits Refugee Camps with Seven Other Notable Women: Solidarity Mission to Push for Ceasefire in Darfur, Chad

Bineta Diop, Executive Director of Femmes Africa Solidarité (FAS), has just returned from a solidarity and fact finding mission to eastern Chad along with seven other prominent women including Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Benin singer Angelique Kidjo.

Sudanese Women's Statement on Darfur

Femmes Africa Solidarité and its partner World YWCA successfully organised a Panel and a series of high level meetings for 6 Sudanese women in Geneva, 12 March to 18 March, 2008.

The women met with UN Delegates, foreign government ministers, ambassadors, NGO's, UN Agencies, the Special Rapporteur on the Human Rghts Situation in Sudan, Ms Sima Samar, and a broad spectrum of key contacts regarding Women in Darfur.

Darfur Peace and Development

Darfur Peace and Development Organization is non-profit and non-sectarian. It seeks to restore reconciliation where conflict exists in the Darfur region of Sudan through advocacy and humanitarian aid to the needy people in Darfur region, without regard to race, religion, sex or national origin.

First East Timorese Women's Conference: Together Against Violence of Women

On UN Day Against Violence of Women, a coalition of women's organizations, including FOKUPERS, Organizacao da Mulher Timor, Rede Feto and the Student Solidarity Council, hold in the town of Dili, the First East Timorese Women's Conference to speak out about violence againt women. Micato and Sabina Fonseca from Organizacao da Mulher Timor were the main speakers giving information on both domestic and military violence.

Campaign to Bring the East Timorese Refugees Home

After the overwhelming result in favour of East Timor independence, an unknown number of East Timorese were murdered, raped and tortured by the Indonesian forces. Approximately three-quarters of the East Timorese population was displaced. By the end of September 1999, over 250,000 East Timorese were living in refugee camps in West Timor. By the end of the year, UN agencies reported over 125,000 had returned to East Timor.

International Tribunal for East Timor's Campaign

The East Timorese Women's Network (Rede Feto) send a letter to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms. Mary Robinson, asking her support for the establishment of the International Tribunal for East Timor's campaign. The East Timorese Women's Network expressed their rejection of the Ad Hoc Human Rights Tribunal in Jakarta for its inability to bring justice to victims, specially women, and asked Ms.

Justice for East Timor

Although East Timor is now completely independent, the population is still struggling against the damage resulting from the Indonesian occupation. The Asia Pacific Coalition for East Timor jointly with Initiatives for International Dialogue launched the “Justice for East Timor” campaign aiming to bring justice and peace, to pursue people-to-people partnerships, and to consolidate the East Timorese civil society.
