International Campaign on Women Human Rights Defenders opens global consultation meeting in Sri Lanka

Nearly 200 activists from approximately 70 countries worldwide gathered yesterday in Colombo, Sri Lanka, to begin an historic global gathering of women human rights defenders. The consultation meeting, attended by the First Lady of Sri Lanka, Shiranthi Rajapakse, is addressing experiences of women who defend a range of human rights issues, as well as women and men around the globe who defend the human rights of women.

Letter Writing Campaign - WOREC NEPAL - Women Human Rights Defenders Assaulted and Beaten

WOREC Nepal and NAWHRDs is appalled and deeply shocked on hearing the cruel brutality of the Police against Women Human Rights Defenders of Chimdi Village Development Committee (VDC) of Sunsari district. Around 14 WHRDs have been severely beaten and injured by Police who charged them with batons and rear of the gun. Please take urgent action.

Letter Campaign for Peace in Sri Lanka

The Women's Network for Peace and Freedom is dismayed by the deteriorating situation in Sri Lanka, and by the failure of the parties to the conflict to respect and abide by the 2002 ceasefire agreement. Particularly of concern are the deaths - and, in some cases, targeting - of innocent civilians and the displacement of people, and the failure of the international community to take effective action to bring an end to this conflict.

The International Gathering of Women Against War took place in Bogota 10-12 August 2004. Attending were women from 15 countries of America who met to strengthen their bonds and to design actions to be developed by the women's movements for peace all over the world.

Women's Bill Introduced in Pakistan

A bill to abolish laws that discriminate against women in Pakistan has been presented before Pakistan's parliament. The Protection and Empowerment of Women Bill has received split views from members of Parliament. According to BBC News, conservatives want to keep the current laws because they were made in the name of Islam under General Zia-ul-Haw in 1979.
